Mr. SEC Wants BUI's Heart to be Broken

Burnt orange is bad enough, Vol orange I could not stand.
Ready For A Big Ol’ Rumor? | MrSEC.com

According to this one, Mike Hamilton is indeed flying to Austin this evening… to “pick up” Muschamp.

According to the source, Muschamp has agreed to take the reins of the Volunteer program.

But wait, there’s supposedly more. In addition to Muschamp, this source claims that Georgia defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator Rodney Garner will be tagging along as Muschamp’s defensive coordinator.

Garner was on Auburn’s staff in 1995 when Muschamp was a first-year graduate assistant.

Do I believe this? No more or less than what else is making the rounds today. But it’s too juicy to pass up.

And if it does turn out to be true, you can trust me to beat you over the head with the fact that MrSEC BROKE THE STORY!

If it doesn’t turn out to be true? Well, just throw it on the trash heap with all the other reports, stories, and leaks that are floating around the web today.

Chirs Low Changes his Tune, Never his Color

Chris Low, he of the Kirby Smart should never make a lateral move to his alma mater conviction, believes, or hopes, that Will Muschamp can be lured away from being Texas’s head coach of tomorrow to be Tennessee’s head coach today. No, it is not an apples to apples comparison, yes, everything is different in Chris’s eyes where orange is concerned.

Several other outlets are reporting Will Muschamp has already turned Tennessee down. Why isn’t Low jumping on that with the same vigor he trumpeted the perceived rejections of Mark Richt? Doesn’t the University of Tennessee deserve the same even handed reporting Chris has bestowed on Georgia?

Is ESPN’s Southeastern Conference beat guy really lobbying an institution he reports on? Has he done this with any other school? Me thinks he is emotionally invested in this one. LOL!
Vols should move quickly on Muschamp – SEC Blog – ESPN

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee athletic director Mike Hamilton’s hope is to have a new coach hired by this weekend.

And, really, with the recruiting period set to go live again Sunday, the Vols can’t afford to go much past this weekend without a coach.

The sooner, the better.

Will Muschamp, Texas’ defensive coordinator and head coach-in-waiting, remains the Vols’ top target, and Hamilton was expected to have talks with Muschamp later Wednesday evening or Thursday morning.

One of the keys in landing Muschamp will be going in and getting him and not letting this thing drag out in search-like fashion.

Tennessee is prepared to offer some serious cash, potentially more than $3 million per year.

Muschamp has made it known that he will certainly listen for that kind of money. He’s making close to $1 million right now with the Longhorns.

It’s going to take a sweet deal to pry Muschamp away from Texas. But if Hamilton goes about it the right way, moves in quickly and makes it known that Muschamp is unequivocally his man, then the Vols will have a chance.

If Muschamp elects to stay at Texas, then former Tennessee assistant and current Duke coach David Cutcliffe may end up being the guy. At this point, it looks like Hamilton is interested in talking with Cutcliffe.

Former Tennessee star quarterback Peyton Manning would be a strong advocate for Cutcliffe.

Others to watch include Air Force’s Troy Calhoun, Ole Miss’ Houston Nutt, Oklahoma State’s Mike Gundy and Connecticut’s Randy Edsall.

Nothing Lateral About Kirby Smart Moving to UGA

The day draws near. The Georgia Bulldogs should soon announce their new defensive coordinator to a longing public. Media types, rational bloggers, and the pragmatic portion of the DawgNation alike, are falling all over themselves to declare someone other than Kirby Smart will be our new top Dawg on defense. They say “there is no way Kirby would make a lateral move from Alabama and Coach Nick Saban to Georgia and Mark Richt.” Can’t happen.

In fact, Coach Saban himself has addressed the issue in what many read as advice to Kirby.
Nick Saban wants UA’s assistants to move up, not sideways | The Bama Beat – al.com

“I’m not pleased when guys make lateral moves because it’s a little bit human nature to think, like my dad used to say, the grass is always greener on top of the septic tank,” Saban said this morning. “You always think it’s better someplace else. You kind of let your ego get involved, and you make moves that you shouldn’t make that really aren’t in your best interest from a career standpoint.”

“So I’m not happy when guys do that. But anybody on our staff who can move up, we would like to help them do that.”

They may be right, it’s not like that has ever happened before. What, it has happened before? When? Last year? You are kidding me.

Kevin Steele, the DC at Clemson, was the DC at Alabama just one year ago. Ron Middleton (Duke) and Lance Thompson (Tennessee) also left Alabama one year ago to make lateral moves. In fact, Major Applewhite left his Offensive Coordinator title at Alabama to be the Quarterback Coach at his alma mater (Texas).

Apparently this lateral move edict from Saban the press is so eagerly disseminating only applies to little ole Kirby Smart. Maybe, in the mind of Chris Low, it only applies to lateral moves toward the little ole University of Georgia. Either way, Saban is hedging his bets.

“It’s important to have continuity on your staff,” Saban said, “but at the same time, when somebody does leave, new energy and new ideas come to your staff, and that also can be helpful in the development of improving your system.”

“I think it happened a little bit this past year (with Steele and Thompson),” added Saban, pausing to choose his words carefully. “I wasn’t happy that anybody left, but at the same time the guys that came in did a wonderful job, and their energy and enthusiasm helped our team this year.”

When watching the Championship game is was evident the Texas defense belonged to Will Muschamp. Everything they did was credited to Muschamp. How many times did you hear Bama’s defense referred to as Smart’s? That is right it was, and always will be Saban’s defense.

Society tends to portray having an ego, or a large one, as being a bad trait. In football, it is a requirement. Be sure Kirby Smart has an ego. He wants credit for his performance. There is nothing lateral about a move from under Saban to over the Georgia Bulldogs’ defense. The title may be the same, but the responsibility and credit are in very much different neighborhoods.

In keeping with the ego theme, it is going to be costly to bring Smart home. Very costly.
Beating Texas would be worth $200,000 for UA coach Nick Saban | The Bama Beat – al.com

That means offensive coordinator Jim McElwain and defensive coordinator Kirby Smart will each receive $72,000 this year, bringing their totals to $432,000 this year.

Bama is sure to pile a little on top of that already impressive (by UGA standards) compensation amount. The market has already consolidated at a range far exceeding Georgia’s current payroll architecture. Georgia has to adjust. Georgia will adjust.

I am not sure Mark Richt wants Kirby as much as he is feeling pressured to pursue Kirby. I do think Richt is politically savvy enough to know swimming against the stream on this hire only makes his job more difficult. The reality, the sad reality, is giving the people what they want buys time.

We will be starting a freshman quarterback next year. The defense is going to be facing some tough situations. Kirby will be given some “rope” no other hire will receive. Kirby is the “smart” hire, whether he is Richt’s choice or not.
