MLK Day and Some Links

I hope your weekend has been great and is not over! For those of you that had to go in today, at least you caught a break from the normal traffic. In my 20 years in the software industry, I do not think a single line of code was written or a single sales call was made on days like today. Today is after all a holiday, and justifiably so.

I try to stay away from politics here, however unsuccessfully, in fact this blog serves as my escape from those realities. As a libertarian minded person, Martin Luther King Jr. serves as a triumph of the individual over government in my eyes. He never sought a place at the table of government. He placed his words and ideas in our collective minds.

His goal, peaceful change, rightful equality.

Today’s leaders drape their true motives in his ideals. They seek profit and power. They march “hit and run” style, only staying long enough to collect. Results matter not to them, personal enrichment and political gain are the only true measures of their effectiveness.

Many will come a calling on Auburn Avenue today. They come to have their picture taken, to associate themselves with greatness. They will make contacts. They will return for their next election. This is how they “pay their dues.”

Today there will be many celebrations of Dr. King’s life and his accomplishments. Teleprompters will be read and pundit’s legs will tingle. Please remember who we are celebrating and why.

Back to football….

Johnny majors endorses Derek Dooley. I believe the time of day the quote was given is relevant here, if you know what I mean.
Orlando Sentinel – College Gridiron 365 Blog – New Vols coach Dooley gets backing of Johnny Majors

Majors told Knoxville television station WVLT that Dooley was an “excellent choice” for the job.

“They say that anybody that can work for Nick Saban for two or three years, you got to be pretty tough. You can’t be a softie and work for Nick Saban, who I respect very much as a coach. He is an outstanding coach,” Majors told the TV station.

Fair or not, I expect Derek Dooley and Skip Holtz are going to be measured against one another for years to come. Right now you would have to give Holtz the edge. Skip did a wonderful job in the sand hills of Carolina. Derek, on the other hand, landed in the SEC East. The Big East pales in comparison.
Orlando Sentinel – College Gridiron 365 Blog – Skip Holtz already cleaning house at USF

No less than a week into his new job and Skip Holtz is already putting his stamp on the South Florida program.

Five USF assistant football coaches, including coordinators Mike Canales and Joe Tresey were let go by Holtz according to a report at the St. Petersburg Times.

Exile takes on Mark Bradley. Good. Now I don’t have to. I think I have figured Bradley’s cadence, it goes some thing like a a a a a b, with every sixth post being positive about Georgia with the previous five being blatant hits. Look, Bradley is a Kentucky man, but he has to be a closet fan of the Dawgs. He enjoys quality collegiate athletics and the Bulldogs afford him the opportunity to witness quality football. I assume the nature of the beast that is professional muckraking requires him to poke the biggest, baddest game in town, or state as the case may be.
A Bulldog in Exile: From the stoopid files

He starts out by saying process didn’t matter, yet for five weeks all he wrote about was process. The he proceeds to say Grantham won’t stir the hearts (and message boards) of Georgia fans, therefore isn’t as good a hire.

The he asks “who had heard of Todd Grantham a month ago?” Well, I have prepared a list:

Bernie puts his always tasty meatloaf on the table, then analyzes his own “dream.”
Bernie’s Dawg Blawg: Monday’s Meatloaf – I Had a Nightmare…of a Dooley in Orange

“No worse fate can befall a man than to be surrounded by traitor souls.” I wasn’t aware Burroughs had ever served any time in the Vol Navy, but I get his drift. Back on point, God bless you Derek Dooley for trying to save a slew of dimwitted mountain folk. You’ve chosen your fate, win or lose. Unfortunately, coaches careers tend not to end well in Knutsville. But surely you knew that going in.

Cousin Walter wants to know if opponent’s QBs will continue to have their career best days against the Dawgs.
What will Grantham’s Pass Coverage be like? « Football on the Brain

What is Georgia’s new coordinator, Todd Grantham, going to do about defending the pass?

In 2009, Georgia had much trouble defending the pass. Was it because of Willie Martinez’s supposive soft coverage? Who really knows? In the South Carolina game, Garcia hit them underneath and while at Arkansas, Razorbacks QB Ryan Mallett hit them deep. They are a few more examples of Georgia’s ineffective pass coverage from 2009 but why put ourselves through the memory.

In case you missed it, Georgia fell to Mississippi State over the weekend on the hardwood. If you have seen the movie “Groundhog Day” you know how Coach Mark Fox must be feeling. Here is my wrap up of the game.

The Georgia Bulldogs went into to Starkville and continued their growth as a basketball team. Ultimately, they could not finish the drill as Mississippi State prevailed 72-69.

So You Want to be a Muckraker

Muckraking has to be an enjoyable profession. I can understand why you would want to be one. Not to throw water on your parade but here are a few words of caution. You probably have a better chance of getting your PGA tour card than landed a choice gig at a major newspaper. Their are more pitchers in the major leagues than large paper muckrakers. And the number is dwindling.

You have to pay your dues with years of toil on some beat getting paid paltry sums. Then, and most importantly, you have to be good. Really good. Sure, there are Adam Krohns out there working for small town papers, probably selling insurance at night. If you want to put your kids through college on a muckrakers salary, you have to be good.

Mark Bradley is one of the best. His back-handed variety of muckraking is an art form. Hey, some people think pornography is an art form.

Take for example “Muckraking Mark’s” post breakfast output.
PJ on Tech’s D-coordinator: “We’re going to have one” | Mark Bradley

No major news was forthcoming at Paul Johnson’s season-ending media session this morning. He didn’t introduce a new defensive coordinator, but he seemed to suggest that it won’t be long now.

As ever, the session was steeped in entertainment value. (PJ, as you know, cannot say, “Good morning,” without applying the arch PJ twist.) Some snippets:

On Georgia Tech’s search for a coordinator: “It’s going good. We’re going to have one sometime. I just want to make sure it’s the right fit … I’ve got some scenarios in play; it’s just a question of what I decide to do and then finalizing it.”

On whether a candidate’s preferred defensive scheme would be a deal-maker (or deal-breaker): “I’m a bottom-line kind of guy. There are a lot of ways to get there … I don’t care if it’s a 3-4 or an eight-man front or a 4-3.”

On last season’s defense: “We gave up enough big plays to last a decade.”

On whether he’d heard from Tennessee about its sudden coaching opening: “I was excited about the Redskins’ [defensive coordinator] job until I saw Jim Haslett got it. [Note: This was a PJ joke.] Really, I’m worried about my job here. The way we played in our last game, I’m hoping to keep it.”

On filling the hole left by Jonathan Dwyer: “I’d be really stunned if our B-back next year didn’t gain 1,000 yards.”

On the season just completed: “If you’d have asked us before the season, ‘Would you take 11 wins and an ACC championship and going to the Orange Bowl?”, we would have said yes.”

Not a whole lot to it, just reporting on his visit to the flats with dripping respect and admiration for the Rambling Wreck’s head ball coach. Not a lot to get excited about. Pretty mundane stuff.

Then, after lunch, he offers this.
Who gains from the SEC’s turmoil? Alas, not UGA | Mark Bradley

Having searched for six weeks, the Bulldogs don’t have a defensive coordinator or a defensive staff. They’ll enter next season with a new quarterback, the result of having left Aaron Murray to redshirt. (A wise choice in most years, but not necessarily in the worst season under this head coach.) Worse still, there’s a growing feeling across the South that Mark Richt is a year away from feeling the big heat.

From MrSEC.com, usually a clearinghouse of conference links, came this post-Kirby-Smart post from John Pennington, its headline reading: “Smart Stays; Richt In Trouble.” Pennington’s argument isn’t that Richt should be in trouble but that, having been spurned three times now by coordinating candidates, he’s being perceived as “inept.”

Short of landing Bill Belichick, it will be nigh-impossible for Georgia to emerge from this protracted search with a coordinator who will satisfy the majority of Dog-lovers. And it does seem troubling that three men who worked in the South and have coached against Georgia — Bud Foster of Virginia Tech, John Chavis of LSU and Alabama’s Kirby Smart, who’s a Bulldog born and bred — saw greater opportunity in the current positions than anything awaiting them in Athens.

Is Georgia now radioactive? Is Richt viewed in the industry as damaged goods? Is there a way for the coach who once moved from strength to strength to overcome this onset of weakness?

As with comedy, timing is everything. Providing Tech as an indirect reference point, then going after Georgia using Columbia for direct reference is sure to have the desired effect. Certainly, the Grady school is full of young students proclaiming they could do as well, if not better, than Mr. Bradley. Alas, they will not get the chance.

Reaction to KirbyGate

The reactions to KirbyGate have been plenty and diverse.

There are humorous ones.
Richt’s stimulus plan: Say no to UGA and get rich | Mark Bradley

Anybody can go out and hire a defensive coordinator. (Well … almost anybody.) It takes a special someone to create plenty in this time of want. Some Georgia folks believe Richt has botched a simple task, but I say, “Au contraire.” I believe the man from Athens had macroeconomics on his mind from the get-go. I believe his real mission was audacious in its scope, and I believe he has succeeded beyond all measure.

Bulldogs Blog: Fleeting Thoughts: Coaching Search Edition

Either way, you’ve got to hand it to Richt… in a bad economy, he’s making a lot of money for people. Perhaps Obama should be giving Richt a call to head up the Treasury Department. (“Yes, that’s right, Georgia has offered the auto industry $12 billion to become the defensive coordinator…”)

There are serious ones.
Buck’s Blog: ‘Dogs Don’t Get Smart

A Georgia man turns his back to his alma mater, even after it offers an unprecedented contract. Make no mistake about it, this is a blow to Richt and the Bulldog program. There will be a backlash. Bad P.R. will surround this move. This hurts. There will be no joy of a big homecoming. The big splash isn’t going to happen. Perception says Richt and Georgia is a second-class citizen right now.

A Bulldog in Exile: On the Defensive Coordinator Hire

Things I don’t care about: Impressing Jeff Schultz or Mark Bradley or Mark May, making random fan in Jackson take a day off from work to see the press conference, scarring Tennessee bloggers, having a ‘Georgia’ guy, shutting up the Florida fans that get on Dawg Vent to rabble rouse, or getting a big name.

Things I do care about: solid coaching and teaching skills, the proven ability to in game adjust, a tenacious defensive style that makes QBs and offensive coordinators nervous, a legit interception or sack threat on every pass play, aggressive run schemes and someone that thinks offensive players are objects to be removed from the most prized possession on the football field..the football. Hey, if the guy can recruit some and gig Lane Kiffin, that is a bonus.

Swinging for the Fences | RTK by Rex Robinson

Most Dawgs would agree that Coach Mark Richt has consistently gone for homerun hires. Virginia Tech’s Bud Foster, LSU’s John Chavis and now native son Kirby Smart. The fact is, just as in baseball, when you swing for the fences, you’re going to strike out some. When CMR does make contact, it will be a homerun. We as Georgia fans just have to stay in the game.

Then there are those focused on the future. I kinda like the one Hamp and Bernie are throwing around.
Hunker Down Dawg: Like the Energizer Bunny, the DC search is still going… still going

I think my favorite from this group may be Tim DeRuyter. Check this out:

Bernie’s Dawg Blawg: Coaching Rumor Update, episode X

And more and more I’m getting sold on a guy I somewhat casually mentioned the other day, Tim DeRuyter. I’d seen Air Force completely dismantle one of the nation’s most prolific offensive attacks in Houston.

As for me, I am just barely beyond the denial stage of my 12 step program for delusional Bulldawg bloggers. My only predistion: We will have a defensive coordinator in place by the time spring ball starts. Even if only on an interim basis.
