The Georgia Bulldogs fell to the Kentucky Wildcats by a final score of 76-68 in a game that was much closer than the final tally would indicate. In fact, the undermanned, but supremely coached, Dawgs would lead this contest much of the way. In the end, turnovers and foul trouble proved too much for the visitors to overcome.
At the season’s start, Coach Mark Fox stated his goal was consistent improvement. Coach Fox is an achiever. These Dawgs went into the toughest venue in the SEC, over came a slow start, and went on a 21-7 run to hold a lead of 35-34 at the half. Travis Leslie had his coming out party early, scoring the first ten points by the Dawgs including an emphatic “face-job” that is sure to be a oft shown highlight on ESPN tonight. Leslie finished with a game leading 20 points.
The Dawgs were in it until the final 90 seconds. Sloppy play in the final three minutes allowed the Cats to pull out the victory. Despite the loss, the Dawgs have to take some level of confidence from their showing against the number 3 ranked team in the land. Notice was served to conference foes across the Southeast. These are not Dennis Felton’s Dawgs.
This group of young men plays smart basketball to the best of their abilities. They play to their strength, the inside game. They play defense with enthusiasm. They play with heart.
I was excited when the season began. I am even more excited following this loss. Given the distance we have traveled in the short time Coach Fox has been on campus, I am giddy with the promise of what tomorrow brings.
No longer are my sights set on next year and year three of the Fox era, I am now more than interested in what this team will look like by mid-February. Come tournament time, nobody is going to want to play this team.
I expect the students have taken notice and the Steg will once again be rocking.
+1 Damon Evans! The early returns are in. Your hire looks to be a great one.
