Before the Georgia bulldogs began basketball season we talked about consistent improvement. That is exactly what Coach Mark Fox is delivering. The Dawgs closed out the non-conference season with an impressive victory over a talented Georgia Tech squad. Coaching and team basketball beat recruiting and street ball. It was very satisfying to watch.

Not much time to celebrate though as the best team money can buy awaits. Georgia travels to Lexington to play in the shrine to basketball that is Rupp Arena. John Calipari, the often target of NCAA investigators, has assembled the best talent that Nike and the AAU leagues could assemble. We may get blown out in Rupp Saturday, but I am confident years from now it will go down as a win after the NCAA has their say.

For now, I am just tickled Red with glee over what Mark Fox has accomplished in his brief time in the classic city. A couple of recruiting classes and he is going to have us competing on a fairly regular basis. There is not a player on the roster that has not shown dramatic improvement over last year. Everything from conditioning to ball handling and off handed shooting has been addressed by Fox and his staff. The future is bright.

Georgia picks up signature victory – University Of Georgia – Macon.com

Before the game tipped off, Mark Fox offered a warning to his players. If they won, he said, he didn’t want them to celebrate as if they’d sealed a championship. He wanted them to expect to win, not to be surprised by it.

In the end, Fox relented and allowed the Bulldogs to celebrate anyway following a 73-66 victory over No. 17 Georgia Tech — their first win over a ranked opponent in nearly three years and a victory Fox called a crucial building block for his program.

UGA wins a shocker, but should we really be so shocked? | Mark Bradley

Yes, yes. We must credit Georgia at the same time we castigate Tech. The Bulldogs have one player (Trey Thompkins) who would make the Jackets’ 10-man rotation. Mark Fox is doing brilliant things with this undermanned team. And Hewitt … well, he’s not looking so brilliant.

Fox wants bigger crowds || OnlineAthens.com

“Our crowd was good; there weren’t enough of them here,” Georgia coach Mark Fox said, “but the ones that were here were good late in the game. We appreciate them. It was similar to Illinois. Late in the game when we needed them, the Bulldog Nation stood up and was there for us.”

Thompkins is twice the player he was as a freshman. Last season was slowed by an early injury and never got into shape. He’s slimmer and quicker now, and he’s a tough matchup for any defender. (Favors started against him but ran into foul trouble, which can happen to post players who are asked to defend face-up opponents.) Thompkins is big but can shoot from distance and make plays off the dribble. The game’s biggest moment was his driving three-point swoop as the shot clock was down to (almost) nothing and the Bulldogs were leading by a point. As coaches say, he made a basketball play.
