Man Up Monday
It’s Tech week, time for giving thanks, time for hate. The Dawgs have got to move on from the catastrophe the was Kentucky, so should I.
If only it were that easy. Before I can swallow the Kentucky game, I need to chew on it a little while longer. Certainly I am not the first to think it, but the Kentucky game was a snapshot of the season. Big plays made, big plays given up, bone-headed coaching, penalties and turnovers have been the norm this year.
The first half, save for penalties, was a good have of football for the Dawgs. The second half’s opening kickoff was symbolic of everything that has gone wrong this year. With all due respect, Coach Richt, Derrick Locke is not the best return man in the SEC, that would be our guy, Brandon Boykin.
Since the second drive in Stillwater our coaches have been all too eager to go cute, to take the shortcuts, unwilling to be patient and grind it out, not satisfied with sound fundamental football. Branden Smith is a great football player that is going to get better, however, sending him in to return kicks is the ultimate risk reward proposition. With a two touchdown lead, our coaches took the risk, went with the shortcut and paid the price.
After the Tennessee game, Coach Richt said he found himself standing around waiting for someone to make a play. Personally, I think that is the way the second half was coached. We were unwilling to settle for running the ball. No confidence in our ability to do the basics. We basically conceded to Kentucky’s kick return team.
Chris Davis was called for a personal foul. Coach Richt pulled him from the game. Chris Davis was held accountable. It is time for that accountability policy to be applied to the coaching staff as a whole.
Coach Richt, for the good of the program, please review some tape from your 2001 team. It was your first year on campus. You had a freshman quarterback. You were coaching, you did not stand around and wait on somebody to make a play. Finish the drill was the motto. Where has that gone?
It is time, hell, it is past time for gimmicks. No more changing the uniform, no more trying to design a special play. Get back to the basics and play sound football better than the other guys.
If we are not strong enough, address it. Whatever the weakness is address it. Whatever you do, please stop giving excuses. Please stop giving up any phase of the game. Do not concede kickoffs, do not concede the running game. Coach this team, put the work in and FINISH THE DRILL.
