Coach Richt, The Players and Fans Deserve Better
The Georgia Bulldogs lost to the Kentucky Wildcats last night 34-27. We had no business losing that game. There is plenty of blame to go around, but this one falls squarely on the coaching staff as a whole. We have had a talent edge in all but maybe two games this year. Coaching is our weak link and it has been since the second drive in Stillwater.
Yes Joe Cox was awful in the second half, but what were we doing running the shotgun on first down with a two touchdown lead? Why were we not running the ball and eating clock when we had run it so well early in the game? Joe Cox is responsible for a play’s execution, but Bobo and Richt are responsible for the play called. The only thing worse than Joe’s 2nd half performance was the play calling.
Poor coaching is the only answer. The same poor coaching that was displayed on special teams and defense was just as evident on offense in the second half.
It was senior night, not Joe Cox night. With a two touchdown lead late in the third quarter, our coaches chose not to run the ball, they chose to let Joe air it out. They chose poorly.
We are the Georgia Bulldogs, not Joe Cox and Company.
Coach Richt said in the beginning that the star of the team was the team, yet he and Bobo have gone out of their way to make Joe the star. I realize, everyone who talks to Joe falls in love with him. The beat writers, the television announcers, and the coaches all love Joe Cox. Funny thing is, all of them are paid to watch the Dawgs. Ask those that actually fork over some cash to attend, those of us outside the arena, and you will get a radically different opinion of Joe Cox.
Our quarterback did some great things last night. He threw some beautiful passes. Joe Cox is our best option at the position, there is no denying that. The issue is, why on earth we were throwing it around like that with a two touchdown lead? Joe ran two sneaks, both for first downs, but ended up taking a shot on the second one. We all know that Cox handles contact like sunlight, and criticism.
We abandoned the run with a two touchdown lead. We abandoned the run with a two touchdown lead. We averaged 4.5 yards per carry and we quit running it. Why? Did our coaches care more about sending Joe out on a high note than they did about winning the game?
Joe threw the picks and was sloppy with the ball, but I really don’t hang the loss on him. Our coaches should know better than to take the risks we were taking. Whether the goal was “style points”, Joe’s legacy, or Bobo simply wanting to put his offensive chops on display in the event he is job seeking, it was an utter FAIL. Perhaps Uga VII had had enough and couldn’t bear to watch anymore.
John Fabris should not even be allowed to watch special teams practice, let alone have any input. I realize Locke is a helluva return man, but shouldn’t he have to beat us once before we decide to concede and beat ourselves in the kickoff game?
On a night were bad coaching was on display in all phacets of the game, Willie was not the worse. Locke is a good one, give him a short field and you are going to pay for it.
I love Mark Richt. I pray he learns from last night and this season as a whole. Loyalty is a admirable quality. It is time for Richt to be loyal to us, to the University, to those outside the arena. Frankly, his loyalty to staff and special fifth year seniors is misplaced. The players deserve better. We deserve better.
I fell terrible for the Seniors that played their guts out last night. Most of them didn’t wait four years for their turn. They have been contributing all along. They deserved better than to have their effort and dedication cast aside for the glory of one, dare I say it, primadonna.
Mike Bobo, I have been your biggest fan. I have even suggested you be our coach in waiting. This morning, however, I am ready to see you leave with your precious Joe Cox.
The future is bright for this team, these players, at least. We have talent galore. Maybe they need a coach like Jim Tressel that values winning above all else. After all, the ugliest win is far prettier than a “pretty loss”.
Damn it, the players, you know the other 84 scholarships and the 30 walk-ons that bust their asses on the practice fields, deserve better from their coaches. Maybe, just maybe, they deserve new coaches.
Mark Richt, I beg you, please stop defending and start assessing. No more cliche’s about shopping wood. Staying the course is the wrong answer when the course is wrong. The goal is to win football games, each and every one of them. The goal is not to reward one particular player. The goal is not to protect your coaches. Their job is to protect you. Wake up!

I think you hit on something that’s been bothering me this year–wasted talent. This year I have seen UGA get less from more than any other SEC team. That falls squarely on coaching.

It is never fun to be critical of a man as classy as Richt is, but for the life of me I do not understand some of the decisions he has made this year.

Well said. But I have to differ on your original feelings about Bobo. I have always thought he was made better by the talent in the field. Now that the talent is minus a few key players, we see what come out. Now it could be we had to limit our gameplan, but the result is the same. I have never looked to anyone on the current staff as a coach in waiting. Just didn’t think it was there.
I do agree that the loyality as gotten in the way of success at times, but I also don’t want to become a true “use them” type if school.
I’m so glad a had to turn in before the end of the game, else I might have lost a tv.

You probably have a point about Bobo. It may have just been the “homer” in me coming out and wanting a Georgia man at the helm when Richt retired.
I do not want to be a “use them” type of school, my point is, what is best for the program should trump what is best for any individual player or coach.

Correct me if I’m wrong but if I’m not mistaken the coaches send in the play and based on what the defense shows Joe Cox has the option to check down to another play. And he did that regularly all night.

Can’t say whether or not Joe was checking to the pass, but the formation makes me believe we were not content to take the air out of the ball and grind it out on the ground.
The majority of our second half running plays went east and west. Kentucky did stuff a few running plays up the middle, but we have never let incompletions or interceptions stop us from passing, why give up on the running game?
We are not getting the blocking from the FB position we are accustomed to, that is for sure. Perhaps it is because we do not practice it enough.
